When I was more serious about photography I thought about trying to crash a glass-making workshop.

You’ve reminded me, pre-COVID there was a local glass blowing spot that did open barn doors into a cobble stone alley. I’m gonna look into that,
Thanks.

That’s what shop class looked like when I was in high school. It was all stick and oxy-acetylene welding.
Ok, the lighting wasn’t quite that artistic.

When I was in highschool the shop/auto shop had been taken over by the physics department, plus some more vocational stuff like typing and drafting. There was a separate vocational school (pooled across three counties) for those who wanted to go that route.

That doesn’t make sense to me because learning isn’t just about training for a job. Not everyone who welds works as a welder.

I agree, electives are good, even (especially?) if they aren’t laser focused on some career path. I did have wood shop in middle school (in a different district) , in 7th grade they had us take one quarter each of art, music, shop, and home ec, and then in 8th grade they let us pick which of the above we wanted to take.
